Derby, where our Jazz Band performsTowns, cities and regions have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune. Of Derby, has been said:- " From the beginning the development of the City has been to the creation of greater profits for the masters. Priority for commercial success was always placed before consideration of beauty and civil rights. With the opening of Derby's (and the worlds) first public park, there was a marked change from this attitude. But prior to this event, civil rights had always been a controversial issue in the city's history. In 1833 there was a lockout of workers from one of the mills, which was started by the managements placement of a disciplinary fine upon a worker for turning out reputedly shoddy work. The worker walked out, and other workers followed in sympathy. These workers were in turn locked out of the mills. A not unfamiliar story, but this was a first, and by the end of the lockout 1000 workers had joined the unions whose mutual avowed objective was the introduction and protection of labour rights.
