Aylesbury, where our Jazz Band performsTowns, cities and regions have an influence on the style of music, whether it is the 'English Countryside' feel of Vaughan Williams, the strength of Elgar's Victorian Malvern, or the skirl of Northumbrian Pipe tune. Of Aylesbury, has been said:- " Aylesbury started as a Saxon settlement called Aegel's burh. Burh is a Saxon word meaning fort or fortified settlement. It is possible the Saxon settlement had a ditch and earth rampart with a wooden palisade on top. By the 11th century Aylesbury had a mint and probably had a weekly market. However Aylesbury was no more than a large village with a population of a few hundred. For centuries Aylesbury remained a large village rather than a town. Most of the people in Aylesbury made their living from farming rather than from industry. However Aylesbury was an administrative centre. Because of its weekly market it served as a focal point for the surrounding villages. From the 13th century Aylesbury also had 2 fairs. In the Middle Ages fairs were like markets but they were held only once a year for a few days. People would come from all over Buckinghamshire to buy and sell at an Aylesbury fair. In the late 14th century Fransiscan friars arrived in Ayelsbury. Friars were like monks but instead of withdrawing from the world they went out to preach and help the poor. Fransiscans were called grey friars because of the colour of their costumes. In the Middle Ages there was also a leper hospital just outside Aylesbury dedicated to St Leonard. There was also a hospital for the poor and sick dedicated to St John. " "Well, the word jazz bothers me. It bothers me because, as long as I've been publicly identified with it, I've made less money and had more trouble than when I wasn't." - LOUIS ARMSTRONG Click to Enter database [Jazz Bands in Aylesbury for your wedding] [About Jazz Bands] [Ensembles in Aylesbury wedding music repertoire] [About Aylesbury] [About music in Aylesbury] [About Wedding Venues] [About Wedding Ceremonies registrars, ministers and music] [About kinds of music such as classical, jazz or folk] [Frequently Asked Questions FAQs] [Ensembles1] [Ensembles2] [Ensembles3] [Ensembles4] [Links] [Home Page] |
